‘Why we do like to be beside the seaside’ is our new topic and to kick it off with a bang we made ice cream. We used a recipe to correctly weigh out milk, sugar and vanilla and added them to our ice cream maker (a sandwich bag). In another bag we added ice, salt and the smaller bag. After much shaking the ice had frozen the ingredients and our treat was ready to enjoy!

Following the Easter break we were shocked to find that all the crayons in the classroom had quit, leaving messages of protest in their place. Hopefully we can learn enough about persuasive writing to bring them back for good!

This week we finally got to read our story ‘Bedtime for Monsters’. The children have done lots of learning around the illustrations and developed the character and the setting. After listening to the story the children then worked in groups to re-enact the story developing their expression and actions to match the text. Have a look at our story telling skills below.

In science this week we were asked to consider the positive, minus and interesting points of an umbrella made from glass. We were then given a challenge to make a new umbrella for Winnie the Pooh and find the most suitable material to do this. We decided the material needed to be waterproof, strong and hardwearing. From the materials we were given (fabric, tissue paper, cardboard, plastic and kitchen roll) we made a prediction about which we thought would be the most suitable and had to explain why. Using the resources we created a fair test to find out which one was the best. Take a look at what we did and ask the children which was the best and why!

This week in English we have continued with our ‘Power of Pictures’ learning and the children have really enjoyed creating their own characters. We used the character from our new story as inspiration to create our own ideas for our own characters. We used the illustration from the book to help us think about what our character might look like and how they might behave. Take a look at just a few of our fantastic illustrations below!

This year on World Book Day in class 5 we had a bedtime story theme. All the children dressed up in their pyjama’s, onesies or as their favourite character and brought a teddy and story book. We shared our stories and listened to each others favourite stories. After we shared our stories we discussed why we liked the story talking about the characters, plot, ending and any special events in the stories. We had a go a creating our own unusual characters and described them using lots of WOW words.
We also enjoyed some yummy hot chocolate and biscuits while some of the children were the teacher and read parts of their favourite story to the rest of the class.
Take a look at our fantastic costumes and what a great day we had celebrating reading!

Remember ‘Keep on Reading’ 🙂

On Monday morning when we had arrived at school we noticed we had, had a visitor! We didn’t know who it was or where they were from but they left some clues for us to find out. We noticed the funny footprints on the carpet and the strange shadow on the wall. We used the clues to create pictures of who we thought the person was and what we thought they might look like. Take a look below at some of our fabulous ideas. Later on we found out who the monster was and what he looked like but we still didn’t know anything about him. So then we brainstormed our ideas about what type of monster we thought he might be. Some thought he might be kind or funny and some even thought he might be scary. Take a look at some of our ideas below and keep checking back to see if we eventually find out!

Challenge morning! The children were given a challenge this morning and worked very well together to complete it.
‘You have 20 minutes to make a piece of furniture using only the resources provided’. The children were given paper scissors and Cellotape. The children used a range of skills from planning, designing, working collaboratively, thinking, developing resilience and challenge. Take a look at some of the furniture they made from bed, settees, tables and chairs, they’re fab!

We also had a go at our new challenge puzzles some were very challenging !

In science children were given a challenge to ‘Make a rope that holds as many weights as possible’. They had to find out how materials can be made stronger using only crepe paper and weights. The children were given a set amount of time to investigate and test out ways to make the paper stronger.
Questions they had to consider were:
Will your rope be stronger if you use more pieces of paper?
Will a longer rope be stronger than a shorter rope?
What do you think will happen if you twist the pieces of rope together?

The children investigated all possibilities finding that the shorter and thicker the rope the more weight it held. The children had fun working together testing out their ideas. Have a look at some of our learning below.
